Seva Mandir works in 626 villages of Udaipur and Rajsamand districts, situated in the Southern part of Rajasthan. The local population continues to remain dependent on the natural resource base for a large part of its livelihood needs. Today, the forested and common lands, which constitute 72% of the total land area, are excessively degraded. Only 13% of the land under cultivation has some form of irrigation. For all practical purposes a delineated watershed would be chosen as the area of operation.

Manav Adhikar Seva SamitiRanjan panda, Dhanupali, Sambalpur Dist, Orissa 768005ranjanpanda@gmail.com
Manav Adhikar Seva Samiti (MASS) was initiated in the year 1988. MASS is working with poor, tribal and underprivileged sections of the society in the resource rich but economically poor state of Orissa. MASS believes that the management or mismanagement of natural resources hold the key to development. Hence, all the interventions of MASS basically pivot around natural resources. MASS is working with the communities in the western region of the state. Water scarcity has been the most crucial and pertinent challenge for this region. Despite having a rich past of wisdom in harvesting and management of rainwater, this region is now suffering from chronic drought conditions. Realizing this MASS has facilitated a campaign called ‘Water Initiatives Orissa’ through which it is trying to promote people’s efforts on rainwater harvesting and management. A media advocacy campaign is also initiated to sensitise media on water issues.
MASS has been very effective in promoting people's planning and development in participatory approaches. Its strong research of issues of its operational area and sectors has enabled it to devise suitable approaches to development. Integrating Environment Education in each of its programmes and processes has helped in bringing in the ethics of ecological conservation and development in force.
